Top 10 Campsites in Germany

2024-11-29

Germany's campsite network is among the most rigorous in Europe. The ADAC (Germany's motoring organisation) rates sites annually, and the Promobil app catalogues Stellplätze across the country. Facilities standards are generally high; the debate is over scenery. These ten sites answer that debate in favour of the countryside.

1. Camping Walchensee, Bavaria

On the shore of Walchensee, the deepest pre-Alpine lake in Germany at 190 metres, with the Herzogstand mountain rising directly behind. Electric pitches for motorhomes and touring units, tent meadows on the lakefront, a sanitary block that earns consistent five-star reviews in the ADAC guide. The lake is cold even in summer — mountain meltwater — and remarkably clear. The road from Munich through the Isar valley takes 75 minutes.

2. Camping Schluchsee, Black Forest, Baden-Württemberg

On the eastern shore of Schluchsee, the highest and largest reservoir in the Black Forest. Four-star ADAC-rated with full electric hookups, a motorhome service point, sanitary facilities to a high standard, and direct lake access with a beach and boat hire. The site operates year-round. Cross-country ski trails start directly from the campground in winter.

3. Camping Wagenburg, Lübeck Bay, Schleswig-Holstein

In the dunes above the Baltic at Pelzerhaken, near Neustadt in Holstein. ACSI CampingCard accepted in low season. Electric pitches, a good sanitary block, and the best-positioned campground on the Lübeck Bay coast for the combination of beach access, sea views, and reasonable drive time from Hamburg. The site is family-oriented with a playground and a shallow swimming lagoon.

4. Knaus Campingpark Frickenhausen, Franconia, Bavaria

On the Main river in the Franconian wine country east of Würzburg. The Knaus chain operates consistently well-rated sites across Germany, and Frickenhausen is among the best positioned for wine touring: the Main wine route passes through the site's road, and the medieval walled town of Frickenhausen is 200 metres away. Electric pitches, motorhome service, sanitary block with individual shower cabins. ACSI-listed.

5. Park Camping Lindau, Lake Constance, Bavaria

On the peninsula approach to Lindau Island, where the Bavarian Alps reflect in the Bodensee. One of the most scenically positioned sites in Germany: the lake is 63 km long, the Austrian Alps are across the water, and the medieval Lindau old town is a 20-minute walk. Powered pitches, tenting area, full facilities. The site attracts German, Swiss, Austrian, and Dutch tourists simultaneously — it is busy throughout July and August.

6. Camping Resort Bayerwald, Lower Bavaria

A large four-star resort site in the Bavarian Forest, close to the Czech border. Indoor pool, multiple sanitary blocks, electric pitches, mobile home hire, and a full sports facility programme. The surrounding Bavarian Forest National Park is the largest contiguous forest wilderness in central Europe. Quieter than Alpine sites and well-positioned for the Cesky Krumlov day trip into the Czech Republic.

7. Camping Mössler, Chiemgau, Bavaria

On the Chiemsee — the largest Bavarian lake — near Übersee, on the southern shore facing the islands. A smaller, owner-operated site that consistently earns the top ADAC ratings for cleanliness, service quality, and facilities per pitch. Electric pitches throughout, a good sanitary block, direct lake access. The Herrenchiemsee palace island (Ludwig II's Versailles) is a 30-minute ferry trip from the adjacent boat landing.

8. Camping Tannenwiese, Black Forest, Baden-Württemberg

In the valley above Freudenstadt, in the northern Black Forest. A four-season site used by skiers in winter and hikers in summer, with electric pitches, a sanitary block with underfloor heating, and a small camp kitchen. Freudenstadt has the largest market square in Germany; the site is a quiet base for the Black Forest High Road.

9. Camping Hardausee, Harz, Lower Saxony

In the Harz National Park near Clausthal-Zellerfeld, beside a small reservoir in the spruce forest. The Harz is the highest mountain range in northern Germany and the most accessible wilderness from the Berlin–Hanover corridor. Electric pitches, sanitary facilities, direct lake access. The Brocken mountain summit (1,141 m, reached by narrow-gauge steam railway) is 35 km north.

10. Camping Hopfensee, Bavaria

On the Hopfensee in the Ostallgäu, 5 km from Füssen and the Neuschwanstein castle. One of the top-rated ADAC sites in Germany: electric pitches with individual sanitary cubicles per pitch available on request, a waterfront beach, paddle boat hire, and a site shop with a bakery. The Allgäu Alps are directly behind; the Romantic Road passes through Füssen. An exceptionally well-managed site that justifies its above-average pitch prices.

ADAC and ACSI ratings

The ADAC Camping Guide rates around 9,000 European sites annually and is the most widely used campsite reference in Germany. The ACSI guide overlaps significantly but provides better low-season pricing information via the ACSI CampingCard. Both are worth checking before booking a German site for the first time; the two ratings occasionally diverge on facilities versus setting weighting.
