Top 10 Campsites in France

2024-11-28

France holds one of the densest and best-organised camping networks in Europe, anchored by major chains — Yelloh! Village, Huttopia, Sandaya, and Flower Camping — and supported by a municipal site system that keeps prices competitive even in high-season coastal areas. The ten sites below represent the range from Atlantic surf to Mediterranean calanques.

1. Camping Le Vieux Port, Landes

One of the largest campsites in France by pitch count, situated between the Atlantic dunes and a freshwater lake at Messanges in the Landes. ACSI CampingCard accepted off-peak. Yelloh! Village-rated with a water park, multiple pools, direct beach access, and a full animation programme in July and August. Electric pitches throughout, motorhome service point, mobile home hire. The Landes pine forest flanks the site. Booking for July is typically required by March.

2. Camping Le Castellas, Hérault

In the Hérault valley near the Cirque de Navacelles, this four-star site earns consistent high ratings in the ACSI database for its facilities standard and natural setting. Pitches are well-shaded by mature oak. Electric hookups, a pool, sanitary block with individual cabins, and a small shop. Quieter and less animation-focused than the Atlantic coast sites; suited to families and couples who prioritise access to Languedoc landscape over resort amenities.

3. Camping Les Mouettes, Carantec, Brittany

On the Finistère coast near Morlaix, with views across the Baie de Morlaix to the Château du Taureau. ANWB Best Campsite rating; consistently listed in Cool Camping France. Electric and non-electric pitches in a landscaped maritime setting, good sanitary facilities, and direct access to tidal beaches. Brittany's camping season runs May to September; the site is quieter and less overrun than the Vendée coast alternatives.

4. Camping de la Plage, Argelès-sur-Mer, Occitanie

At the northern end of the Côte Vermeille, between Perpignan and the Spanish border, this Sandaya-operated site has direct beach access and a full facilities complement: heated pool, spa, multiple sports facilities, and a bar-restaurant. ACSI CampingCard valid in low season. The site operates at very high capacity in August — book by February for summer pitches. The Pyrenees are visible from the beach.

5. Camping Le Domaine du Verdon, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence

Situated above the Gorges du Verdon, widely regarded as Europe's most dramatic canyon, this Huttopia-affiliated site gives direct access to the Verdon kayaking and hiking circuit. Pitches in light woodland, good sanitary block, pool, and camp kitchen. Electric pitches available. The Verdon is at its best in May, June, and September; August is very hot. Camping Key Europe accepted.

6. Camping Hippocampe, Volonne, Provence

On the Durance river north of Manosque, with views to the Luberon massif. One of the most consistently five-star-rated private sites in Provence by ACSI reviewers. Waterslides, multiple pools, sports facilities, direct river access, electric pitches throughout. Motorhome service facilities on site. The location splits the journey between the Verdon gorges and the Luberon villages conveniently.

7. Camping La Pinède, Royan, Charente-Maritime

In the pine forest immediately north of Royan on the Gironde estuary, with access to the long sandy beaches of the Côte Sauvage. Four-star site with electric pitches, pools, a good sanitary block, and a reasonable in-site restaurant. The Royan market town is 3 km by cycle path. Quieter than the Landes sites and well-positioned for the wine châteaux of the Médoc across the Gironde.

8. Camping La Pineta, Corsica

On the eastern coastal plain near Ghisonaccia, between the mountain interior and the long beaches of the east coast. A Yelloh! Village site with pool, direct beach access, electric pitches, and full motorhome facilities. Corsica's camping infrastructure is notably better than its relative obscurity suggests; the site is well-placed for the UNESCO Genoa Towers coastal forts and the Bavella mountain passes.

9. Camping Sandaya Lac de Serre-Ponçon, Hautes-Alpes

On the shore of the largest artificial lake in western Europe, with the snow-capped Écrins visible across the water. Sandaya-operated with its standard five-star facilities package: heated pools, electric pitches, a waterpark for children, and a well-equipped sanitary block. Kayaking, paddleboard hire, and cycling on the lake loop circuit available from the site. Good alternative to the Verdon corridor for water and mountain access combined.

10. Huttopia Rambouillet, Île-de-France

The most accessible high-quality camping in the Paris region: 45 km from central Paris in the Rambouillet forest. Huttopia's formula — wooden cabins and canvas tents alongside conventional pitches, a pool, and light woodland setting — is consistent across their network. Electric pitches, good sanitary facilities, and a nature orientation that distinguishes it from the resort-style coastal sites. A useful option for anyone arriving into Paris and wanting a forest start before heading south.

ACSI CampingCard and booking

The ACSI CampingCard is a discount card offering fixed low-season rates (typically 12 to 20 euros per night including two adults and electric) at over 3,300 sites across Europe, with strong France coverage. It pays for itself in three or four nights. The ACSI guide also contains the most reliable facility listings and ratings in the European market.
